What the May 2024 hail did around Bedford
Bedford was near the center of the Mid-Cities hailstorm on the evening of May 27, 2024. The Storm Prediction Center logged 2.75 inch hail about a mile north of Bedford, 2-inch hail about a mile southwest, 1.75 inch hail to the west-northwest and northeast, and several 1-inch reports across the city.
Hail that size can break a shingle’s bond and crack the mat beneath the granules. On many roofs hit that night, the shingles may still lie flat and shed water for now. The damage shows up later as granule loss, leaks around nail heads or shingles that tear loose in the next strong wind. By then, a homeowner may be past the policy’s deadline to report the original storm.
How an inspector finds damage you can’t see
Hail damage is found up close, not from the yard. On a Bedford roof we work from the soft metals inward, because metal records hail plainly and gives a fair read on the size of the stones before we look at the shingles themselves.
- Soft metals. Vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts dent clearly and show the size and direction of the hail.
- Each slope. We check every slope separately, since hail usually hits the side facing the storm hardest.
- The shingles. We look for soft bruises in the mat, displaced granules and cracked or broken seal strips.
- The attic. Fresh stains or damp decking show where water is already getting in.
- The report. You get dated photos of what we found, and of what we did not find.
The roof inspections page explains what the inspection covers, and what insurance covers explains how hail damage is typically handled in Texas policies.
Repair, replace or claim
Once the inspection is done, there are three possible answers. Minor, isolated damage is a roof repair. Widespread bruising across several slopes usually points to a roof replacement, often through an insurance claim. And sometimes there is nothing worth claiming, which we tell you plainly. Our repair vs. replace guide goes deeper.
If you file, we can meet your adjuster at the roof. We never waive or pay deductibles, which Texas law prohibits.
If the roof is being replaced after hail, it is a good moment to price Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. They are tested to resist hail impact better than standard shingles, and some insurers offer a premium credit for them. We price standard and Class 4 options side by side, so you can weigh the added cost against the credit your agent quotes.
