The August 2026 wind storm
On the evening of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, a fast-moving storm hit Watauga hard. The city reported 20 to 30 trees damaged, two businesses on Rufe Snow Drive were heavily damaged and a home was struck by an uprooted tree, according to FOX 4.
The National Weather Service tracked winds up to 55 mph, but the damage pointed to gusts of 65 to 70 mph. NBC 5 reported downed power lines, broken windows and debris across parts of the city, while viewers photographed hail falling in neighboring North Richland Hills.
Wind like that does two kinds of roof damage. The obvious kind is missing shingles and tree strikes. The less obvious kind is broken seal strips: shingles that lifted, flexed and lay back down looking normal, but are no longer bonded. Both are worth finding before the next storm does it for you. Our roof storm damage page explains the inspection.
When a tree hits the roof
A tree on the roof is a structural problem first and a shingle problem second. The weight and impact can crack rafters and decking well beyond the visible hole, and that damage has to be found and repaired before new roofing goes on.
- Stay safe. Keep everyone out of rooms under the impact and stay off the roof.
- Photograph before anything moves. Capture the tree, the roof and any interior damage for your insurer.
- Stop the water. A tarp or temporary seal keeps rain out until the permanent fix. See emergency roof repair.
- Remove the tree. That is usually a tree service’s job, done carefully so it does not cause more damage on the way off.
- Inspect the structure. We check the rafters and decking from the attic and the roof, then write up the repair.

A small city between larger neighbors
Watauga is a compact city in northeast Tarrant County, bordered by North Richland Hills, Keller, Haltom City and Fort Worth. Rufe Snow Drive and Denton Highway are its main corridors. Much of the city is established single-family neighborhoods, and a storm that hits one street usually hits the next one too.
Hail is part of the picture here as well. On May 27, 2024, large hail fell a few miles away in North Richland Hills, Keller, Hurst and Bedford. If your roof has not been looked at since then, a free inspection covers both storms.
A storm like August’s also fills gutters and valleys with leaves and broken branches. Debris left in a valley holds water against the shingles, and clogged gutters overflow back under the roof edge into the fascia and decking. Clearing them soon after a storm is cheap insurance, and we check both during every inspection. See gutters if yours need replacing.
