Signs a Hurst roof needs repair
Most roof problems give some warning before they become a ceiling stain. The trouble is that the early signs are easy to miss from the driveway, and Hurst’s spring storms can turn a small weakness into an active leak overnight. These are the signs worth checking for.
- Damaged shingles. Curled edges, cracks, bare patches where granules have worn off, or shingles missing after wind. A damaged shingle lets water reach the underlayment, and the next storm finds it.
- Granules in the gutters. Some granule loss is normal on a new roof. Heavy loss on an older roof, or right after hail, means the shingles are wearing through.
- Sagging or damp decking. From the attic, look for decking that dips between rafters, dark stains or a musty smell. Moisture has been getting in for a while. Caught early, it is often a roof repair rather than a roof replacement.
- A hot upstairs. Rooms that stay hot and cooling bills that keep climbing can point to poor attic ventilation, which also shortens shingle life.
If you see any of these, a free roof inspection tells you which ones are real and what fixing them involves.
The May 2024 hail in Hurst
On the evening of May 27, 2024, a hailstorm crossed Hurst on its way through the Mid-Cities. The Storm Prediction Center logged 1.75 inch hail in Hurst, 2-inch hail about 2 miles east-southeast and 2.75 inch hail about 2 miles southeast. Bedford and Euless saw reports just as large the same night.
Hail that size damages shingles in ways you can’t see from the yard: bruises in the mat, loosened granules and broken seal strips. The roof can keep shedding water for months before it starts to leak. If your roof was not inspected after that storm, we will do it for free and tell you plainly whether there is anything to claim. Our roof storm damage and insurance claims pages explain the next steps.
Trees, valleys and gutters
Many Hurst streets have established trees, and the canopy changes how a roof ages. Leaves collect in valleys, where two roof planes meet and the most water runs, and hold moisture against the shingles. The same debris clogs gutters, which then overflow back under the roof edge and into the fascia and decking.
Limbs are the other risk. A branch strike in a storm can crack the decking under an intact-looking shingle. None of this means taking trees down. It means keeping gutters clear and having the roof checked once a year, ideally before hail season.
