How do TPO, PVC and EPDM compare side by side?
The table compares the three membranes on the points that drive a decision: how seams are joined, grease and chemical resistance, surface color, hail, typical uses and repairs. Service life and cost depend on thickness, the assembly underneath, drainage and maintenance, so we state those for your roof after we inspect it rather than as a single number.
| TPO | PVC | EPDM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Thermoplastic sheet, reinforced | Thermoplastic sheet, reinforced | Synthetic rubber sheet |
| Seams | Hot-air welded | Hot-air welded | Seam tape or adhesive, not welded |
| Grease and chemicals | Limited for grease and oils | Strongest of the three for grease, oils and many chemicals | Limited for grease and oils |
| Surface | White, reflective | White, reflective | Black standard; white available |
| Hail | Depends mostly on thickness and the cover board under it | Same | Same |
| Typical uses | Retail, office, warehouse, multifamily | Restaurants, kitchens, food processing, chemical exhaust | Sound existing EPDM roofs; where simple patching matters |
| Repairs | Clean and weld a matching TPO patch | Clean and weld a matching PVC patch | Clean, prime and apply an EPDM patch or tape |
| Watch for | Weld quality; grease exposure | Contact with asphalt-based materials | Seam tape aging; heat on a black sheet |
Each system has its own page: TPO roofing in DFW, PVC roofing for restaurants and kitchens and EPDM rubber roofing.
When should you choose TPO?
Choose TPO for offices, retail, warehouses, light industrial and multifamily buildings without grease on the roof. Its white, heat-welded sheet suits large, sun-baked DFW roofs where cooling load matters, and manufacturers describe its installed cost as lower than PVC’s. Avoid it where grease or oils reach the roof, and remember that results depend heavily on the quality of the welding.
| Choose TPO when… | Avoid TPO when… |
|---|---|
| The building is retail, office, warehouse or multifamily | Kitchen grease, oils or chemical exhaust reach the roof |
| A white, reflective surface helps with cooling load | Wet insulation hasn’t been removed |
| You want welded seams without paying for grease resistance | The crew can’t show how seams are probed and checked |
Roof Experts, LLC is Elevate (Holcim) and GenFlex certified, and both manufacturers make TPO systems. More on TPO roofing in DFW, including recovers and flat roof repair.
When is PVC worth the extra cost?
PVC is also a heat-welded thermoplastic, but it resists grease, animal fats, oils and many chemicals better than TPO or EPDM. That makes it the usual choice for restaurants, commercial kitchens, food processing and buildings with chemical exhaust. On a roof without those exposures, the extra cost usually buys performance the building won’t use.
| Choose PVC when… | Avoid PVC when… |
|---|---|
| Restaurant or kitchen exhaust puts grease on the roof | The roof has no grease or chemical exposure and budget matters |
| Food processing or chemical exhaust reaches the membrane | It would touch asphalt-based roofing or flashing without a separation layer |

When does EPDM still make sense?
EPDM is a synthetic rubber sheet with a long track record on low-slope roofs. Its seams are joined with tape or adhesive rather than welded, and standard EPDM is black, which adds heat load in a Texas summer. It still makes sense for keeping a sound existing EPDM roof in service, and where simple patching matters most.
| Choose EPDM when… | Avoid EPDM when… |
|---|---|
| An existing EPDM roof is sound and worth keeping in service | Grease or oils reach the roof |
| Simple patching matters more than a white surface | A black surface would add cooling load on an occupied building (white EPDM or a coating may help) |

How do DFW heat, hail and ponding change the choice?
North Texas roofs face long hot summers, large hail and heavy bursts of rain. A reflective surface reduces heat on the roof. Hail performance depends mostly on membrane thickness and the cover board beneath it. Ponding water means fixing drainage or adding tapered insulation first, whichever membrane you choose. Hail damage is usually an insurance question.
| DFW condition | What matters | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Summer heat | Surface reflectivity | Membrane color and the product’s published reflectivity |
| Hail | Membrane thickness, cover board and insulation | Cover board type and existing damage |
| Ponding | Drainage and taper | Drains, scuppers and low spots |
For hail or wind damage on an existing roof, see roof insurance claims. We photograph and measure the damage and meet the adjuster at the property; the building owner files the claim.
What warranty comes with each system?
Roof Experts, LLC gives the same 2-year workmanship warranty on TPO, PVC and EPDM roofs, covering our labor, so the membrane you choose doesn’t change our side of it. Manufacturer NDL warranties available. When you compare bids, ask each contractor to put in writing who backs each warranty, what it covers and how long it runs.
Don’t compare a warranty that covers only the material against one that covers the whole roof system. If one bid looks cheaper, check whether the warranty behind it covers less.
Where we’d recommend something else
Sometimes none of the three is the right answer. A roof that is mostly dry and sound may only need a restoration coating. A roof with heavy equipment traffic may suit modified bitumen. If the insulation is wet, it has to come out before any membrane goes on. We’ll tell you if replacement can wait.
- Sound, mostly dry roof: silicone roof coatings or acrylic roof coatings.
- Heavy equipment traffic: modified bitumen roofing.
- Wet insulation: removal first, whichever system follows.
Roof Experts, LLC installs TPO, PVC, EPDM and modified bitumen roofs and applies silicone and acrylic coatings, so the system in your written scope is the one that fits the roof.
How do you compare TPO, PVC and EPDM bids line by line?
Ask every bidder for the same list: tear-off or recover, deck repairs, insulation type and taper, cover board, membrane type and thickness, attachment method, flashing details, edge metal, walkway pads, the warranty in writing, and the closeout documents. Bids that leave out layers aren’t cheaper; they’re incomplete. Our written scope covers every line.
- Tear-off or recover, with the moisture survey result
- Deck repairs and how they’re priced
- Insulation type, thickness and taper plan
- Cover board
- Membrane type and thickness
- Attachment method
- Flashing details at walls, curbs, pipes and drains
- Edge metal and walkway pads
- Warranty: who backs it, what it covers and how long it runs
- Closeout photos and paperwork
Why DFW owners ask Roof Experts, LLC to compare systems
Roof Experts, LLC has served Dallas–Fort Worth from our Arlington office since 2017. We’re Elevate (Holcim) and GenFlex certified, insured, and registered with the City of Arlington. We inspect the roof, explain which membrane fits and why, and put the scope in writing. We’re rated 4.9 on Google.
We work on all three. Recent jobs include a PVC roof on a restaurant in Decatur, a TPO retrofit over an existing metal roof in Mansfield, and an emergency temporary repair on a hurricane-damaged TPO roof in Galveston.
