The April 2022 storms south of town
One well-documented storm night near Burleson was April 4, 2022. Storm Prediction Center reports show a tornado, given a preliminary EF-2 rating by the National Weather Service, tracking from northwest of Joshua toward FM 917 and I-35 a few miles south of Burleson. Quarter-size hail fell in Burleson, about 2 miles southwest of Spinks Airport.
The same storms left minor shingle damage on several homes near Alvarado from straight-line wind, and an EF-0 tornado damaged roofs north of Venus, according to those reports. Storms here can bring wind damage as well as hail, and wind damage is easy to overlook. If you were nearby that night, or after any strong storm since, a free inspection is the way to know. See roof storm damage for what we check.
Where wind damage starts
Wind rarely tears a roof off all at once. Damage starts at an edge, the eave, a rake or the ridge, where wind gets under the first shingle and breaks its seal strip. Each shingle that lifts exposes the next, and the damage works inward with every gust.
Two things follow from that. First, a shingle can lose its seal, lie back down and look fine, but it is no longer bonded and will lift or leak in the next storm. We hand-check seal strips along the edges for exactly this reason. Second, on a new roof, the starter course, drip edge and ridge cap installation matter as much as the shingle’s wind rating. We install all three to the manufacturer’s instructions on a roof replacement.
The same goes for nailing. A shingle’s wind rating assumes it is fastened the way the manufacturer specifies, with the nails in the right zone and the right number per shingle. A high-wind shingle nailed too high or too few times will not perform to its rating, and the label on the bundle can’t fix that.
Permits in Burleson
Burleson’s Building Permits & Inspections office, part of the city’s Development Services department, issues permits and handles inspections at City Hall. Permit rules for roofing are not the same across the Metroplex. Arlington exempts small repairs, Fort Worth exempts some shingle-only jobs, and Grand Prairie permits every roof job.
We confirm what Burleson requires for your address and scope before the job is scheduled. If your neighborhood has an HOA, we also give you the product and color details for its approval.
