Storms the weather service has measured here
The National Weather Service Fort Worth forecast office is on Northern Cross Boulevard, about two miles northwest of Haltom City, so some of the area’s storm readings come from its own instruments. It measured a 70 mph gust on March 2, 2023, and recorded 1-inch hail at the office on April 26, 2026. Other reports came from spotters, residents and an NWS damage survey.
| Date | What was reported | Where |
|---|---|---|
| April 2, 2023 | Golf ball hail (1.75 in.) | Near Lower Birdville Road |
| March 2, 2023 | 70 mph measured gust; metal roofing peeled off with winds near 80 mph | NWS office and store and manufacturing buildings just north of the city |
| March 4, 2025 | Straight-line winds near 105 mph (NWS survey) | Wathall Road between Field Street and US 377; homes lost part of their roof decking |
| April 26, 2026 | Hail, 1 inch | NWS Fort Worth office |
These reports, compiled by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, show what was observed nearby. They don’t tell you what happened to your roof.
Signs of hail on an older Haltom City roof
On an older roof, hail damage has to be separated from age. Weathered shingles lose granules evenly and turn brittle; fresh hail hits leave random, dark bruises where granules were knocked off, sometimes with the mat exposed or cracked. Dents and spatter marks on vents, gutters and downspouts help confirm that the damage is new.
That distinction matters because an adjuster looking at an older roof may call the damage wear. Our job during the inspection is to photograph the two separately: the hits that match a storm, and the aging that doesn’t. If the honest answer is that the roof is worn out but not hail damaged, we tell you that, and the denied claim guide explains your options if a claim is turned down.
The decking question on a claim
Haltom City’s roof permit requires decking to be inspected before new felt and shingles go on, with minimums of 5/8 inch for board sheathing and 7/16 inch for panels. Decking that falls short isn’t always in an adjuster’s first scope. The city’s own FAQ says the contractor or homeowner then has to get insurer approval.
We try to get ahead of that. During the free inspection we measure and photograph the decking from the attic, so if it’s undersized, the issue can be raised with your insurer before tear-off instead of in the middle of the job. Our page on what insurance covers explains how code-required items are typically handled, and roof replacement in Haltom City walks through the full permit process.
How we handle the claim side
If the inspection finds storm damage worth claiming, we document it and stay involved through the rebuild. If it doesn’t, we say so. You file the claim and make the decisions; our role is to give you and your adjuster an accurate record of the roof. The usual sequence is below.
- Free inspection with dated photos of every slope, the soft metals, the attic and the decking.
- You file with your insurer, using the storm date that matches the damage.
- Adjuster meeting. We can walk the roof with your adjuster; see our adjuster meeting page.
- Scope review. We compare the insurer’s scope with our findings and document missed items, including decking, for a supplement.
- Repair or replacement under a Haltom City permit, with the decking inspection before felt goes on.
We are not a public adjuster, and we never waive or pay a deductible. Our deductibles guide explains why, and the insurance claims hub covers the process. Smaller storm repairs are on our Haltom City roof repair page.
