How Gutters Protect Your Roof from Water Damage and Leaks

Short answer

Gutters collect the rain that runs off your roof and carry it through downspouts away from the fascia, walls and foundation. Without working gutters, water spills over the roof edge, rots fascia and decking, stains siding and pools at the slab. Clogged or damaged gutters can also back water up under the roof edge and cause leaks.

Although they might not look like much, gutters play a very important role in keeping your home, and especially your roof, in good shape. When your gutters aren’t working properly, water can do serious damage to the outside and inside of your home. If you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and need your gutters replaced, repaired or cleaned, Roof Experts can help. We have served DFW homeowners from our office in Arlington since 2017.

What Exactly Do Gutters Do For Your Home?

Gutters are a key part of your home’s drainage system. Every rain, however light, sends water down the roof to its edge. When gutters are missing or overflowing, that water spills over the edge, soaks the fascia and the edge of the roof deck, and splashes against the siding and foundation. When gutters are clogged, water backs up under the drip edge and the first row of shingles, where it rots the decking and can work its way into the walls. Once moisture is trapped in your roof, walls or ceiling, it becomes a breeding ground for mold and mildew that you and your family end up breathing.

If you neglect your gutters for too long, several things can go wrong. If they have taken too much damage from harsh weather, they can develop holes or pull away from the house. Gutters that aren’t in place can’t do their job of carrying rainwater away from your roof. Gutters that aren’t cleaned often enough cause problems too. In fall and winter especially, leaves, twigs and shingle granules wash into your gutters and form clogs. Clogged gutters are poorly performing gutters. Built-up debris stops water from flowing, and the weight of standing water can pull gutters loose from the fascia and send water into your roof edge. It is very important to have your gutters inspected and cleaned, and Roof Experts can take care of that. Our post on common gutter problems shows what we find most often.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need gutters on my house in Texas?

Most homes benefit from them. North Texas storms can drop a lot of rain quickly, and without gutters that water pours off the roof edge onto the fascia, siding, walkways and foundation. Clay soils here swell and shrink with moisture, so keeping water away from the slab matters.

Can clogged gutters cause a roof leak?

Yes. When gutters fill with leaves and shingle granules, water backs up at the roof edge and can soak the drip edge, fascia and the lower edge of the roof deck. That can show up as rot, stained soffits or water inside the exterior wall.

How can I tell my gutters are not working?

Watch them during a heavy rain. Water spilling over the front, dripping behind the gutter, pooling at the foundation, or downspouts barely flowing all point to clogs, poor slope or undersized gutters. Peeling paint and rot on the fascia are other signs.
