Emergency tarping in Arlington
If wind or a fallen limb has opened your roof, the first job is keeping water out. We offer emergency tarping in Arlington: 24/7 emergency service, call anytime. A tarp is a temporary cover fastened over the damaged area and past the ridge, so rain runs over it instead of under it.
While you wait:
- Move people and belongings out of rooms with water coming in, and put buckets under drips.
- Stay off the roof. Storm-damaged decking may not hold weight.
- Photograph the damage outside and inside before anything is covered or moved.
- Keep receipts. The Texas Department of Insurance notes your policy may pay for temporary repairs.
More detail is on our emergency roof repair page.
What wind, limbs and tornadoes do to a roof
Wind damage starts at the edges. Gusts get under the eave, rake or ridge, break the seal on one shingle, and each newly exposed shingle loses its seal in turn. Falling limbs do different damage: punctures, cracked decking and broken rafters that need repair from underneath as well as on top.
Arlington has seen the worst case. On April 3, 2012, a tornado the National Weather Service rated a preliminary EF-2 tracked about 4.6 miles from Kennedale into Arlington, crossing I-20 and ending near Lake Arlington, with winds estimated up to 135 mph. Most storms are smaller, but the damage pattern is the same: edges, ridges and anything that catches the wind.
From tarp to permanent repair
Once the roof is covered, the work follows a set order so your claim and the repair line up. Photos come first, then the claim and adjuster visit, then the permit if one is needed, then the repair. Skipping ahead, such as replacing decking before the adjuster sees it, makes the damage harder to prove.
The City of Arlington requires a permit when more than 10 percent of the roof covering is replaced, which a serious wind or tree event often exceeds. Damaged decking has to be replaced to current code, and new decking cannot be laid over old. If hail came with the wind, see hail damage roof repair in Arlington, and if the roof is beyond repair, roof replacement in Arlington and what drives DFW replacement cost.
Who to let on your roof after a storm
Storms bring door-to-door crews to Arlington within days. Texas does not issue a state license for roofing contractors, so a license card proves nothing. What you can check is whether the company is registered with the City of Arlington, which the city requires of roofing contractors working here.
Then use the Texas Department of Insurance checklist: never sign a contract with blank spaces, never pay in full up front, and walk away from anyone offering to waive your deductible, which Business and Commerce Code §27.02 makes illegal for contractors. Our licensing page explains what to verify, and insurance claim help in Arlington covers the claim itself.
